Sponsor a Child

Every child has a right to certain privileges, but due to various financial reasons children are deprived of even the basic needs such as housing, education, food, clothes and health care. Living Hope Boys' and Girls' Home provides these facilities to children and inspires them to get an education and dream of professions beyond construction and masonry work. This is not to say that we undermine those professions, but we create a platform for the children to have broader options in life. Today, children at Living Hope aspire to be engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers and many other professions. These are things they would never have dreamt of, while playing in the mud and cement of the construction site at which their parents worked.

Living Hope Boys and Girls Home estimates that $20 a month per child hence $240 annually can provide medical and dental care, educational assistance, clothing, improved living conditions and much more for the children for whom we care.

As a Sponsor, you will make a great difference in the life of a child. You are welcome to select from the list of our children who you want to sponsor and in that case you will be provided with the Case History of a particular child with his/her photograph at the time of the sponsorship. You will also be informed of the child's progress twice a year by the Living Hope Children's Programme Coordinator. The sponsored child will write a letter or greeting card twice a year along with activity photograph of the child and an Academic Progress Report of the child.

With prior notice, a sponsor is most welcome to visit the child at the Home.

Frequently asked questions

1. How much does it cost to sponsor a child?

It costs $20 a month to sponsor a child which will be utilized towards the education, health care, clothing, social skills development, meals and shelter. More than this you are building a brighter future for the child. The child and the sponsor will have a real connection through letters and perhaps face to face conversation.

2. How long should my sponsorship last?

Although, the children will stay with LHA up to Higher Secondary School, at LHA, we encourage our sponsors to support the child till he or she reaches the age of 21 and complete his/her under graduate programme.

We recognize that circumstances sometimes change at the sponsors end. In any case, you may discontinue your sponsorship at any time. But we request you to consider that sometimes the sponsored child’s circumstances may change, too. sometimes families move beyond the reach of LHA programmes and children then have to leave LHA sponsorship.

We will inform you as quickly as possible if any such circumstance affects the child you sponsor, and we'll offer you the opportunity to support another child in need of your help.

3. May I send gifts to my child ?

Yes, LHA encourages sponsors to give additional gifts to their sponsored children for special occasions like festivals, birthday, to address specific need or simply as an act of love. As a guideline, we ask that sponsors keep these contributions between $10 and $25 for each child and limit their gift giving to thrice a year.

4. How can I communicate with the child I sponsor?

Once you've become a sponsor, you are most welcome to write to the child. You may write to the child you sponsor as often as you like. When you write, your sponsored child will benefit from knowing that someone in addition to his or her family really cares. Your words of encouragement will make a big difference to your child.

We encourage you to send your sponsored child a personal or family photograph and a short letter of introduction.

The address of the sponsor will be kept confidential

All the letters and gifts sent to the sponsored child will be checked by the LHA staff as a guideline if it’s appropriate for the child

Sponsored children typically keep their sponsors' photos and letters in their homes as treasured possessions and will pray every day for their sponsors.

5. Will my child write to me?

Your child will write to you at least two times a year. A teacher or staff person will help children who have yet to learn how to read and write. Letter writing is developmental for children as it improves their basic literacy, self-awareness and ability to put thoughts and feelings into words.
As you share your own family and personal concerns with the child you support, you'll probably discover that he or she is consistently praying for you. As your exchange of letters with the child you sponsor grows over the years, you can build a scrapbook of letters and photos from your child. Your scrapbook will serve as a constant reminder of the relationship you've developed with the child you're helping and of how you've contributed to his or her growth.

6. What specific benefits will the child I sponsor receive?

The child you sponsor will receive opportunities and services that most of the world's poorest children will simply never see. These opportunities and services include the following:

  • The opportunity to receive an education: This means providing the cost of school fees, clothing and supplies. Your sponsorship will allow one special child to stay in school longer if formal schooling is an option and get the most out of his or her education. In Bombay, all our kids are sent to private English medium schools without anybody realizing whether they come from a rich or a poor family as they are given the same clothes, uniforms and supplies as children from well to do families.
  • The opportunity to be healthy: The health of the child you sponsor will be monitored and care will be provided as needed. Children are taught about hygiene and how to maintain personal health. In addition, and according to their needs, the children receive meals during their hours of education – typically breakfast and lunch. In case of orphan children, they live in homes built specially by LHA for them and thus receive all meals in the day, like any other child from a well to do family, would have.
  • The opportunity to develop self-confidence and social skills: Field volunteers, teachers and housekeepers will offer the child you support love, guidance, personal attention, guided recreation and safety.
  • The opportunity to have a home: In case you are sponsoring an orphan child, then the child you sponsor will be living in the home built by LHA for the orphan kids.
  • The opportunity to cover oneself with proper clothes: All our children are given two sets of school uniforms for summer and winter months both and informal clothes including shoes, socks, belts etc.
  • The opportunity to be just a child: Most important, LHA strives to provide childhood back to the child by providing games, fun activities, picnics, fancy dress in annual function etc. to the child.
  • 7. Will I be the only person sponsoring the child I'm helping?

Yes. The child you're helping has just one sponsor: you. That's why your prayers, letters and support mean so much to your sponsored child. No other group or individual will also sponsor the child you help.

    8. If I must discontinue my sponsorship, what happens to the child I'm helping?

If you need to discontinue your support, we will immediately look for a new sponsor for your child and continue the child's support without interruption. But LHA requests it Sponsors to at least three months of advance notice.

    9. Can I understand the background of a child before sponsoring?

Yes, you are obliged to receive a brief background of the child you wish to sponsor.

    10. How do you ensure that the money I give reaches out to the child's family?

LHA does not pay any money to the child's family. We pay the education fees of the child directly to the school, buy books directly from the school, buy stationary directly from the school, buy two pair of uniforms directly, buy shoes, socks, belts, thermos, lunch box, pencils etc. directly, buy informal clothes directly, pay for medical exams twice a year, pay for picnics directly, buy and give them festival clothes directly, buy and give them annual function, dance clothes directly, provide meals directly etc. LHA believes that education is key to the future of every child and thus everything centers on that. We do not offer any money to the family as it could be otherwise wasted by the father on alcohol or could be used for something that the family deems important, while our goal of providing a bright future to the child would be compromised in that case.

    11. How long I have to wait to get a notification that my registration is successful?

Once you pay the registration fee, immediately your profile will be activated in Blue Bank and available to employers in India and abroad. There is absolutely no wait time for your profile to be activated.

    12. What other opportunities will I have to learn about the child I'm helping?

In addition to letters from your sponsored child, LHA will send you periodic updates about your child's progress.

    13. Can I sponsor children at any age?

    Yes

    14. How do I sponsor a child and pay for the child?

LHA is trying to make this process easy for Sponsors to pay online. But for the moment we are requesting the sponsor to either send a cheque or do a wire transfer.

Please send the cheque to the following address:

    Living Hope Association
    P.O. Box 3210
    R.T. Nagar Post.
    Bangalore 560032. India.
    Tel: +91-9342544442

And if you wish to do wire transfers please ask us for the details by email.

    15. Are my contributions to LHA, including my sponsorship support and gifts, tax-deductible?

At the moment the contributions to LHA are not tax-deductible in any foreign country but only in India.
